Be A Changer

At some point or another, we all need words of encouragement to fuel our souls and give us the inner strength we need to just keep going in life. There will be times where the sun will shine bright and everything is happy go lucky; but other times, you just want to crawl under a rock and just stay there forever.

The book of Ecclesiastes speaks about time. There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens. (Read chapter 1)

So, don’t beat yourself up if you’re having a bad day, because there is a time to laugh just as there is a time to weep. There will be days where you will be strong and courageous and will conquer the whole world. But then there will be days where you feel so weak, you won't even have the strength to hurt a fly. And I want to tell you that its ok to feel that way, it just shows that you’re human!
Scott Burdett

It is in those times that we must rely on people who can give us an encouraging word to uplift our spirits. Yes, we can go to the bible and God will give us the strength and power we need to jump right back up and shake off that funk that we’re in. But it’s so important to have a friend or a support group where you can go to and say, I need you right now and not feel ashamed about it. People who you can trust and know they will give you an honest word of encouragement.

Today, I encourage you to be a changer, to be an encourager, to lift up the hands of those who are weary and have no strength, may your words be medicine to their souls. We all long for encouragement. Your words, your act of presence, your smile, your “I’m here for you” your emails, text messages, phone calls, letters, Facebook post, tweets, or random act of kindness and generosity is what can help someone in a time of need.

The world is full of people who are lost, who have given up on hope, who are going through hardship and have no one to turn to for encouragement. Make yourself available to fulfill that need and bring a ray of sunlight into someone’s dark world. We are called to be the light of the world. (Read Matthew 5:14,15) You and I can make the difference. Be a changer!

I leave you below with a few encouraging words I found from the book “Encouragement Changes Everything” by John C. Maxwell.

In a later post, I will include more encouraging messages from this book because it’s just that amazing!

Be Encouraged, Be Blessed!
Landy Perez-Feliciano

1. Encouragement is oxygen to the soul.
-George Matthew Adams

2. An Experiment in Encouragement
Years ago, an experiment was conducted to measure people’s capacity to endure pain. How long could a bare-footed person stand in a bucket of ice water? It was discovered that when there was someone else present offering encouragement and support, the person standing in the ice water could tolerate pain twice as long as when no one else was present.

3. Encouragement is deciding to make your problem my problem.

-John C. Maxwell

4. Encourage Yourself

Don’t let yourself…
  • Worry when you’re doing your best.
  • Hurry when success depends on accuracy.
  • Think evil of anyone until you have the facts.
  • Believe a thing is impossible without trying it.
  • Waste time on trivial matters.
  • Imagine that good intentions are a satisfactory excuse.
  • Harbor bitterness toward God or person.

5. Let no feelings of discouragement prey upon you, and in the end you are sure to succeed.

-Abraham Lincoln

6. Positively Wired
A study was done by psychologist Henry H. Goddard on energy levels in children. He hooked children up to a device called an ergo graph to see how they would respond to the words of others. He found that when tired children were given a word of praise or commendation, the ergo graph showed they experienced an immediate surge in energy. But when the children were criticized or discouraged, the device showed their energy took a sudden nosedive.
Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word.

7. The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but to reveal to him his own.
-Benjamin Disraeli

Speak Life

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but names/words can never hurt me” - Nursery Rhyme

Now think...think..think....

I remember screaming this back to kids who during recess would hurl mean words at me and to be honest, I think I might have been on the receiving end of this infamous statement as well :-).  But the truth is that words do hurt and names do mark us and to think otherwise is a great danger.  I believe wholeheartedly that a truer statement of the power of words came from a Journalism teacher I once had in college.  He said:

“We are wordsmiths and as such, are responsible for the words we share”

Words have power.

The Bible further confirms this.  Take a look at the infamous “Tongue = Life or Death” scripture:

Proverbs 18:21

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]. (AMP)

Your words have much more power than you attribute to them:  The power to build and tear down, the power to encourage or discourage, the power to love to hate, etc.  The list goes on and on!

Can I share a story with you?  Great!  Here goes:

A few years ago, I received a call to put a band together for an international Christian artist who would be on tour in the Tri-State area.  I was excited to take on the task not because it was  my first time but because I am so passionate about music.  I immediately called friends who are phenomenal musicians and asked them to come on board on yet another band I had to put together.

Drums?  CHECK!.......Guitars?  CHECK.......Bass?  CHECK!........Keys?  Check?!?!  (Hmmmm)

I usually play keys for these bands but recently felt insecure in my gift (yes yes, it happens to the best of us).  However, I took a bold step and shut down all insecurities, I thanked God for my gift and was also encouraged by a circle of phenomenal musicians who believed in my gift and would SPEAK LIFE into my life as a musician.

After months of preparation, I received a call from the artist’s manager.  I still remember that I pulled the car into the church parking lot as I saw his name pop up on my phone’s screen and with excitement I picked up the call:

“Hey! God bless!”

“Hey Ruthy...”

“What’s going on?”

“Listen, I know you’ve been putting the band together but when the artist heard you were playing keys, he said ‘If she is playing, I’d rather sing alone with tracks’”

[Silence]

“Thanks Ruthy but if you’re playing, we have to cancel the band”

“.....ok, God bless”

I froze......pain in my chest....fingertips cold...speechless......

I walked out of the car and into the back door of the church.  As I opened the door, my father stood at the bottom of the steps with his usual “¿Como estas mi linda?” I fell into his arms and sobbed uncontrollably.  The wordsmith who once sat in a Journalism class, the little girl who would yell at recess “words can never hurt me” now stood as a woman, unable to form a thought because words had literally shattered her to pieces; they had spoken death over her life as a musician.  Every insecurity came up, every doubt in my gift screamed louder than any word of encouragement could during that season of brokeness.  A series of events before and after multiplied the hurt and like a night stand, my keyboards became places for books, jewelry and dust....nothing more, nothing less.

But God! Yes, But God!!

That season of brokeness sparked by the words of a manager came to an end when I surrendered the broken pieces of my heart to my Creator and He spoke words of love, kindness and confirmed that the gift He had given me was entrusted to the right person..Me!  God then placed others that once again spoke life into me.  I decided to push myself as a musician, learn more, do more. Wow!  Words nearly sent me down a path of destruction BUT GOD!!

So how does this story end?  It doesn’t. Instead it grows with me as I continue to understand that my words DO have power and that I am responsible to build up those around me.  Even a word of rebuke spoken in love will speak life!

BE ENCOURAGED! Those words that were spoken over you to seemingly destroy are cancelled by the one who Created you!  He knows you best and will surround you with His best.

Speak Life :-)

The power of Words

I love to read devotionals because I receive a sense of empowerment and encouragement that no matter what I am going through, everything is going to be ok. We can all relate, I'm sure. The simple thought of knowing that things may have slipped from our control but nothing slips God is comforting. He has and will always have control over everything in our life! And something that I have told myself repeatedly is that words are powerful. The words that come out of your mouth have power to bless or curse, it has power to shift a negative atmosphere to a positive one. Your thoughts are translated into words and those words have power to bring forth change. Need a change in your life? It starts with your declaration. Make sure that your words coincide with the results you want to see. The bible says "Keep this Book of the Law [word of God] always on your lips; meditating on it day and night [your thoughts], so that you may be careful to do everything written in it [obedience]. Then you will be prosperous and successful [God's blessings]. {Joshua 1:8}

I came across this awesome word from Dr. Cindy Trimm and I wanted to share it with you. I know it will bless and encourage you!!

A certain cleaning brand has a new series of commercials that are really powerful! Have you seen the ads where people are blindfolded and asked to describe what they smell? In each instance, they are brought to a place overflowing with garbage, dirty socks, or rotting food. But, in every case, the blindfolded test subjects have a pleasant response, saying it smells like the ocean, clean laundry, or tropical breezes.

In each of the commercials, we're promised that this wonderful product has the ability to transform the environment from disgusting to delightful; that no place is so odiferous that a few sprays of this amazing cleaner can't make it pleasant again.

Whether you believe the product claims or not, it does provide a great parallel for what you and I can experience in our lives. You see, you are likely to find yourself in places that aren't always pleasant. Maybe you're dealing with stress or conflict on the job. Maybe your home has become anything but a place of peace and rest. It doesn't have to stay that way!

You can neutralize the negative effects of what has taken place in your home and in your business by what you put into the atmosphere. You have been empowered by God to infuse His Presence, His Promises, His Provision, and His Protection into your environment. You have the power within you to change your surroundings - wherever you are - into a place of peace and prosperity... because GOD is within YOU!

In fact, you can initiate the change you want through the power of your words. Job 22:28 states that you can decree a thing and it shall be established. The power of blessing and cursing, even life and death, is in the words you speak.

It's time for you to take authority with your words. Put them to work FOR you instead of against you by declaring your home and business blessed!

Powerful words by Dr. Cindy Trimm, huh? I encourage you to not say what you don't want to see, but declare [speak] what you want to see happen in your life, in your family, in your situation. Your words, when aligned with the word of God are powerful and life-changing. I will leave you with this verse, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edge sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. {Hebrews 4:12}

There is purpose {Speak Life}

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life]. Proverbs 18:21

We have been given an incredible tool which is our mouth and what comes out of our mouth is powerful. And what we speak holds great responsibility. We are accountable not only for our actions but for our words as well.  The bible says that death and life are in the power of the tongue.  What you say is powerful and every word pronounced has a purpose.  What are you declaring, death or life?

Sometimes it’s better to just stay quiet, right?  We’ve all heard the saying: If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.  If your criticism is not constructive and if its purpose is not to build but to destroy, is it really worth saying? There has to be purpose in what you speak! What about my problems Landy?  You have no idea what I am going through? Some may say that but I want to tell you that even in the mist of your troubled times, you can still control what comes out of your mouth.  With the help of the Holy Spirit, you can overcome any situation.  If you do what you can do, God will certainly do what you cannot do.
Do not allow your problems and disappointments to overcome your thoughts which will later translate into words.  Acknowledge them but do not dwell on them, focus your attention on declaring purposeful words over your life. Fuel your mind with the goodness that God has in store for you.  Remember, your trials too shall pass, they have an expiration date. [Hallelujah!]  So, start rejoicing in the joy of the Lord and be in a ‘great expectation’ state of mind, expect that something great is about to happen.  Fill your mouth with God’s promises and declare His blessings over your life and you will see that as your praises go up; blessings will began to come down.
Take a moment and give yourself a pep-talk and say: (Insert your name) I refuse to continue to live a life of fear, depression, anger and bitterness! I am better than that and I will no longer continue to feed into the lies of the enemy.  I have been given a powerful weapon and I will start to use it correctly and immediately.  I speak life into my life and into my family.  Whatever struggles I am facing that apparently are dead (no solution, impossible) I speak the powerful words of life over it. I receive God’s acceptance, His joy and His blessings.  I will change my vocabulary and I will speak life and in abundance because my words have purpose.

Trust God to give you the strength you need in anything and everything you do and say.
